We asked you the question in June 2022, we ask you again two years later. Today, what is the main obstacle to purchasing an electric bike? This is the subject of our survey of the week.

It’s undeniable, the world of electric bikes has experienced a before and after Covid-19. Everyone – or almost – has rushed to an eBike to escape transport and the risk of contamination, gain freedom of movement and optimize their travel times by leaving their car and traffic jams behind.

In recent years, the sales figures speak for themselves – except for the 2023 vintage, affected by a post-Covid bubble which was fatal to the sector. In June 2022, Frandroid asked you the following question: what is the main obstacle to purchasing an electric bike? At the time, price and fear of having it stolen were two of the main reasons.

Stagnating prices, but an affordable offering that is growing

Two years later, the time has come to take stock again. Especially since things have since evolved, often in the right direction. For example, brands are starting to gain perspective on the formidable effectiveness of GPS and other trackers against bicycle theft: recovery rates generally exceed 90%. Ultra-resistant anti-theft devices have also been developed, like the Granit Super Extreme 2500 that the Abus brand tried to cut in two in front of us, without much success.

On the price side, status quo : the average price of an electric bike has not changed much in two years and is stagnating just below 2000 euros. On the other hand, players like Nakamura (Intersport) and Decathlon are striving to launch relatively affordable models, just like Lidl and its Crivit X2 that we recently tested.

The lack of cycling infrastructure was also a blocking point. Good news: they have developed considerably in two years, particularly in Paris – but not only – in the run-up to the 2024 Olympic Games. According to the Aménagements Cyclables website, the City of Light had 374 km of cycle paths in January 2023, compared to 404 km today.

In 2024, what is the main obstacle to purchasing an electric bike?

The Metropolis of Lyon perfectly illustrates this strong paradigm shift: 361 km of cycle paths were recorded in May 2022, compared to 527 km in May 2024. In short, things are changing considerably in the large cities of France. On the government side too, since purchasing aid has been extended to second-hand cycles.
