The Play Station?
For the youngest, imagine that you learn from a web page that the audiovisual manufacturer Samsung is preparing to invade the market with a console. What would be your reaction to such a hypothesis, especially when we know that very established players like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are already seriously established? Well, these are exactly the questions that arose in the heads of gamers when the first PlayStation was announced. At the time, just about everyone expected Sony to bite the dust against Nintendo and SEGA and any other outcome was completely unthinkable. Three decades later, the reality is quite different, even if the road was long for the Walkman company (a portable music player as they say in good French).
Indeed, before tackling the pharaonic PlayStation project, Sony was associated with Nintendo since it supplied the sound chip equipping the Super Nintendo, the famous emblematic machine of the early 1990s. It was then a question, for both parties, to collaborate again to respond to the CD-ROM challenge by creating an additional CD player allowing players and developers to access digital media. This CD player was planned for the Super Nintendo and lots of rumors emerged at the time. It is ultimately an improbable story, a sort of love triangle (Nintendo – Sony – Philips), which got the better of the device and especially a Super Nintendo console equipped with a CD player (the all-in-one ) which was codenamed Play Station. Sony then decided to strike hard by delivering its own vision of video games via a machine resembling a snub to Nintendo, the PlayStation. A prototype of the initial concept imagined by Nintendo and Sony emerged a few years ago, but fans have always found it a shame that this collaboration did not materialize over time.
The improbable merger
No doubt nostalgic for this bygone era, the YouTuber James Channel, already at the origin of completely improbable and brilliant hybrid devices (like a Super Smash Bros. playable on a TI-83 calculator),
decided to create its own version of the Play Station. And the least we can say is that it didn’t go with the back of the printed card. The person concerned recovered a Super Nintendo shell (or rather Super Famicom, the Japanese model) and integrated the – remodeled – architecture of the PlayStation into it. The result is absolutely crazy since the optical unit is positioned vertically and the CD is inserted instead of the usual Super Nintendo cartridge. We can see him launch the first GTA without any problem, as well as the Japanese game Pepsi Man.
Even better, James Channel had fun removing the region lock (Japan, United States, Europe) between games and emulated Nintendo NES games. You are probably wondering if the machine also runs Super Nintendo games? Well, believe it or not, but according to the modder, the PlayStation doesn’t pack enough power to run Super Nintendo games. In any case, it’s a funny device and it demonstrates, once again, that the fans are definitely full of talent. Launching a Final Fantasy VII on this machine, wouldn’t that be the ultimate irony?
