Since April 21 and from the city of Mandalay, a militia has launched the “Red Operation” targeting cadres of the National League for Democracy and any member of the resistance to the junta.

In Mandalay, in the north of Burma, supporters of Aung San Suu Kyi are trembling. An official of the National League for Democracy (NLD) office in the Amarapura district was found murdered on Monday. Hands tied behind his back, his stomach pierced with stab wounds, Zaw Gyi’s corpse was thrown along a river, on the edge of his neighborhood. This is the ninth murder in a series of attacks against NLD members and their supporters in less than two weeks. A local militia, the “Bloody Comrades” (“Thwe Thout”), proudly claimed responsibility for each of the killings.

Since their creation and the launch of their “Red Operation” on April 21, the pro-junta group has terrorized the country’s second economic city.
