In Calais, around 350 migrants evacuated from camps

The police evacuated, Friday morning May 13, about 350 migrants installed in camps in Calais, ” in the calm “ according to the prefecture, associations denouncing forced sheltering and the seizure of migrant property.

The evacuation took place after the issuance of an eviction order by the judicial court of Boulogne-sur-Mer, seized by the owner of the land. Pointing to problems of public tranquility and safety as well as health, the Pas-de-Calais prefecture wrote in a press release:

“For several weeks, more than 350 people had settled illegally in numerous camps in the Turquerie sector, a natural area located in the municipalities of Calais and Marck. A proposal for shelter was made to all the migrants present in these camps and interpreters were on site. »

Migrants who accepted this proposal were “oriented towards accommodation structures” of the department.

“Forced shelters”

Human Rights Observers (HRO)who documents these evictions on the northern coast of France, denounced to Agence France-Presse “forced shelters”. “They are picking up everything, tents, personal items, food”also said a spokeswoman for HRO, saying that preventing people from recovering their tents constituted “also a technique to force them to leave”.

One of the evacuated camps is next to the Transmarck business zone, where a young migrant was found hanging from a trailer on Wednesday, she added.

In April alone, HRO recorded 127 evictions from informal living spaces in Calais and the seizure of at least 219 tents and tarpaulins.
