In certain professions, France would not function without immigration, says Dussopt

A certain number of professional sectors “would not work” in France without immigration, recalled Sunday the Minister of Labor Olivier Dussopt while the right refuses any compromise on the regularization of workers in sectors in tension.

In certain trades, such as kitchen clerk or housekeeper, there are 25% of non-EU foreign workers, compared to a national average of around 3%, he pointed out on Radio J.

We must face reality (…) These trades would not exist without them (…) In a certain number of professional sectors, our country would not function without immigration, he insisted.

The ambition of one of the components of the future immigration bill would make it possible to regularize undocumented workers who are already working in jobs in tension such as accommodation and catering, health or construction.

All over Paris, there are men and women in restaurants who have been working for years with a legal employment contract, but their personal situation is irregular, he pointed out.

But the right categorically refuses to discuss this point.

If in a few weeks we find that there is no possible compromise, we will have to decide whether we present the reform which is ours or whether we leave it there, without text, he judged. All avenues are open, he said.

Asked about the sinking in Greece of a migrant boat which could have caused hundreds of deaths, Mr. Dussopt said to himself, with sadness, not certain that this would change the debate on immigration that we have in the National level.
