In full revival of the connected glasses market, Google Glass bows out


Google Glass is over. Augmented reality glasses, presented ten years ago, had already disappeared from the consumer market to focus, from 2017, on the professional segment. Despite the difficulties encountered by these glasses in order to seduce massively, they were declined in 2019 in a second generation Enterprise Edition, based on the Snapdragon XR1 chip from Qualcomm.

Google is throwing in the towel today: since March 15, 2023, the glasses are no longer available for sale. Mountain View will continue to provide their software support until September 15, when the device will no longer be updated. Google Glass Enterprise Editions will still be usable, subject to application developers maintaining them.

Does this mean that Google is completely abandoning the connected glasses market? Not really, since it should be remembered that the American firm not only launched a companion application for its Google Glass at the end of last year, exclusive to Pixel smartphones, testifying to its investment in this area. Above all, during the Google I/O in May 2022, Google had mentioned a project for augmented reality glasses allowing in particular to obtain an instant transcription or translation of conversations. The glasses in question have not been made official, but a design sketch unveiled during the I/O shows that Google has integrated its technology into a frame similar to traditional glasses.
