In order to combat creeping toxicity in vocal cats on call of dutyActivision teams up with ToxMod, an AI designed by Modulate.
This artificial intelligence will therefore be responsible for scanning voice chats for violations of the game’s code of conduct and placing a target on the most toxic players. This new measure is part, like what Microsoft is already doing, of a broader effort by Activision in its eternal fight against a scourge particularly present on this flagship franchise of the FPS genre.
An AI that targets toxic players in voice
According to many studies, call of duty indeed has the sad reputation of hosting one of the most toxic communities in a genre that tends to make its players’ blood run hot. Between toxicity and cheaters, Activision is, so to speak, at constant war to try to clean up its proverbial ticket machine.
This is why the studio has just recently signed a partnership with Modulate, the company behind ToxMod, a moderation system powered by artificial intelligence. Its mission will be to listen and analyze the voice chats of the games call of duty to identify violations of their code of conduct.
On paper, the artificial intelligence will take into account the context of the conversations, the tone used and the emotions conveyed by the voices of the players in order to determine to what extent colored remarks can be considered as speech of hatred, discrimination or of harassment. If this is the case, the offending players will be identified so that the moderation teams can act in real time, if the need arises.
Deployment of the drone in beta
This partnership between Activision and Modulate is in its infancy, with ToxMod being deployed in beta today in North America on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Battle Royale Warzone.
A global deployment (with the obvious exception of Asia) of this new moderation system will take place on November 10, the day of the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare IIIthe new annual installment of the franchise.
It therefore remains to be seen whether the contribution of AI in this eternal war against toxicity on call of duty will prove to be an effective weapon, or on the contrary a new source of problems. It should indeed be noted that, for the time being, such AIs may be overzealous, and not fully grasp the nuance between bad taste joke and real condemnable speech.
