Almost five months of strike action are about to end in Hollywood. The Writers Guild of America (WGA), the screenwriters’ union, reached an agreement in principle with the studios on Sunday, September 24, which could put an end to this protest movement which is paralyzing the industry, according to a letter sent to its members , seen by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“We have reached an agreement in principle on a new [accord de base minimum] 2023, i.e. an agreement in principle on all points of the agreement, subject to the final wording of the contract”specifies the letter.

The three-year contract agreement, reached after five intense days of negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), must be approved by the guild’s board of directors and members for the strike officially ends. On the other hand, no agreement has been announced for the actors on strike.

No return to work until further notice

In a longer message from the guild, shared by members on social media, the writers were informed that the strike was not over and that no one was to return to work until further notice, but that pickets strike should be suspended immediately.

The agreement comes just five days before the strike became the longest in the guild’s history and the longest Hollywood strike in more than 70 years.
