In India, the consumption of adulterated alcohol, sold on the black market, leaves 56 dead and 117 hospitalized

Adulterated alcohol continues to wreak havoc in India. At least 56 people died and 117 were hospitalized after drinking this liquor sold on the black market in a small town in the south of India, Agence France-Presse (AFP) learned on Monday June 24 from the local police.

The previous report, established on Sunday June 23, reported 53 deaths and around a hundred people hospitalized in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the south of the country. It is poor workers, mainly men who work on a daily basis, particularly in agriculture, who regularly buy food.arrack. This drink, common in South and Southeast Asia, is sold in plastic bags for 0.70 euros. It is then often consumed before going to work to give oneself courage.

These workers buy this adulterated alcohol on the streets rather than in official stores. The price of this substance is lower on the black market. Hundreds of people die every year in India from batches of toxic alcohol made in illegal distilleries. Methanol is often added to these drinks to enhance their effects, which can lead to blindness, liver damage or death.
