In Innsbruck – Sustainability a week in the focus of the university

While the “Last Generation” is committed to saving the planet with adhesive campaigns that only drive drivers crazy, the Innsbruck University is taking different and more sensible paths. The first “Sustainability Week” started there on Monday.

In this, the organizers “focus on the topic with its different facets”. A colorful program is offered up to and including Saturday, which is free and takes place at the various university locations and in the city. To kick things off on Monday, there was the cycling workshop, a book flea market, clothing exchange, a plant exchange and a toy exchange for children. Because of the snow on the forecourt of the Faculty of Humanities, we moved to the “Green Office” on Josef-Hirn-Straße. “Green Office “has the topic in focus all year round. This office for sustainability was “launched in May 2021. It is run entirely by us students,” reveals Emilie Matthes during her visit to the “Tiroler Krone”. She and four other colleagues focus on all sorts of topics related to sustainability throughout the year. “We always offer the cycling workshop, the clothing exchange and the plant exchange. We also organize events on the topic, develop various projects and offer networking. There’s not much going on today, but our offerings have generally been very well received,” says Matthes happily. During the first Sustainability Week, the “Green Office” is involved in almost every event and every workshop. “Our goal is to spread the topic as broadly as possible in society. We hope for numerous participants,” the student concludes. Experts spoke about the climate crisis and its consequences. In the afternoon and evening, the event “Coming from knowledge into action” was on the agenda. Lectures and a discussion session addressed the climate crisis, its consequences, options for action and the university’s social responsibility. The climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb, who is also known for her regular column in the “Krone”, was involved, as was Michael Kirchler, spokesman for the special research area Credence Goods, Incentives and Behavior, and also Wilhelm Guggenberger, the dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty. From climate change ABC to for food rescueOn Tuesday and the coming days, numerous program items continue. Those interested are offered, for example, the workshop “Climate Change ABC – short and sweet”, the pub quiz “Climate Crisis” as well as the workshops “Impact first – how we can rethink entrepreneurship” and “Avoiding food waste”. The first “Sustainability Week” will take place at the various Innsbruck University locations and in the city until Saturday. A total of 21 workshops, guided tours, lectures and discussion rounds are on the program, which can be accessed at uibk.ac.at/de/congress/nachhaltigkeitswoche. Interested parties can register for the restricted events there. On so-called “green boards” students can answer open questions about a more sustainable university. Since the whole week is planned as a “Green Event”, “we ask, among other things, for an environmentally friendly journey by public transport, on foot or by bike,” was the organizers’ final appeal.
