In Israel, Binyamin Netanyahu elected prime minister for the eighth time, despite his trial for corruption

Here it is again. Binyamin Netanyahu has once again won his bet by obtaining, with his allies, the majority of seats in the legislative elections on Tuesday 1er november. His coalition brings together sixty-four deputies out of the one hundred and twenty that make up the Israeli Parliament. His party, the Likud, won thirty-two seats. This result will allow him to be designated Prime Minister once again, since he is now the only one capable of forming a government with a majority in the Assembly.

However, he will have to deal with ultra-Orthodox parties and a far-right list to form a government already considered the most right-wing in the history of Israel. The two leaders of the far-right party, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, have asked for the posts of minister of defense and the interior. Mr. Netanyahu has supported them for several years, despite their divergent convictions.

In 2021, Mr. Netanyahu’s opponents hoped to see his political career over, after his defeat in the legislative elections and, above all, his trial for corruption. Except that the former Prime Minister has never renounced power and that he can always present himself, not being condemned definitively.

Along with the corruption charges, Netanyahu is also charged with fraud and breach of trust, all in three separate cases. He has already pleaded his innocence.
