From this month of April, two “radar” cars equipped with an automatic license plate reading system will control parking in the city.

Beware of badly parked vehicles or expired parking tickets, from this month of April, the public road surveillance officers (ASVP) of the city of Lyon will be equipped with a new tool called Lapi for “automatic reading of license plates”.
Two cars will be equipped with this new system. In concrete terms, they will circulate in the city and will automatically read the plates of vehicles parked in Lyon to find out whether they are in order or not.

A specific device for people with reduced mobility
“This device will allow officers to pursue a more effective control of paid parking, and thus devote more time to the control of inconvenient parking. Currently, the low rate of compliance with the payment of paid parking, located at 20 %, does not allow enough agents to deploy on the awkward parking lot (parking on the sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, PMR spaces, cycle lanes, delivery areas, etc.)“, assures the city of Lyon in a press release. And to add:A better compliance rate leads to better turnover, more free spaces, a reduction in the time spent searching for spaces and the possibility, for all users, of parking closer to their destination.“.
With regard to people with reduced mobility, holding a parking inclusion mobility card (CMI-S) or the European parking card (CES) allows them to park free of charge in the spaces reserved for this purpose, as well as in all of the Lyon car park. To avoid errors with this automatic parking, the city will set up a specific device via a free short-term ticket and a long-term registration valid for five years.
Initially, the control by Lapi vehicle will be systematically doubled by a visual control of the presence of a CMI-S/CES by an agent, in order to guarantee free parking for the people who benefit from it.
