In Lyon, two swimming pools return to their temperature of 27°C

After being lowered to 25°C and 26°C in a context of energy crisis and reduction in expenditure by the city of Lyon, the swimming pools of the Rhône (Tony-Bertrand nautical center) and of Vaise (Lyon 9th) have regained their initial heat. Indeed, according to Progress , a week ago, the Lyon municipality decided to heat the water in these two aquatic centers to their temperature of 27°C. The city explains that it took this measure “din a dialogue with users“and in particular high-level athletes”which prepare the next international competitions and in particular the Jthem Olympic and Paralympic Paris 2024 “.

A decision hailed by Stéphane Bonna, director of Lyon swimming metropolis: “This return to normal is welcome for the swimmers and comes at the right time because the qualifications for the French championships are in mid-June.“. According to the latter, the period was managed in good understanding with the city of Lyon, which allowed the athletes to train in the indoor swimming pool of Vaise heated to 26°C.

Sobriety Plan

Because beyond the symbol, a difference of 1°C or 2°C can change everything for swimmers, especially professionals. “The recommended temperature is 27°C so as not to have more than 10°C difference between the temperature of the water and that of the body, otherwise the latter will cool down. Clearly, since the drop in the heat of the water, we have had more sick and injured people because muscle contraction is different, so performance is less good and recovery is not optimal.“, concludes the director of the swimming club.

As a reminder, the city of Lyon presented a sobriety plan last October providing for a 10% drop in consumption over one year. A goal maintained, assures the city of Lyon despite the announcement of the increase in temperature of the two swimming pools.
