Shari Maxwell has thirty-four years of gynecology and obstetrics behind her. To listen to her recount her memories is to see the women and their suffering in her office at Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan.
“I think of a young girl raped by a gang. I think of those poor women in fragile health, whose pregnancy will considerably aggravate diabetes or heart problems. I am thinking of a woman suffering from very aggressive cancer, we know that chemo and radiation are harmful to the fetus, should she wait nine months for this urgent care, taking the risk of giving birth to her child and dying? I have to give them the option of abortion. These are tough decisions. Women cry here. I have seen some who have told me that they would rather pray than have an abortion. It’s their choice and nothing else, but at least we discussed it. What’s going on here is between them and me, and I don’t want anyone but them and me, I don’t want any politicians in my cabinet. »
They entered it, however, and without breaking in, with the blessing of the Supreme Court of the United States, which abolished, in June, the federal right to abortion. So Shari Maxwell came out of it, from her office, with her stories and her firm voice. The gynecologist had never committed before, but she must defend the right to abortion, still legal but fragile in Michigan.
“You know, as a practitioner, I often say to myself when thinking about everything that should be done in this world: ‘I don’t have the time, I’m overwhelmed’, but there, I found it, the time. It’s about women. It’s about us. What I’ve dedicated my whole life to. I had to do something. I was devastated when the Supreme Court decision came down. I got sick of it. I had severe heartburn. How did we get here ? »
