Vremains of another century, the four huge cooling towers flanked by tall chimneys dominate the hills of Saint-Avold, a few dozen kilometers from Metz. At the heart of a coal basin whose population was hit hard by the closure of the mines in the 20the century a surprising tragedy unfolds. The story of the Émile-Huchet coal-fired power plant should have come to an end five months ago, in March 2022, and the site be converted to hydrogen and biomass. Moreover, its 87 employees have been reclassified or retired as part of a job protection plan launched by GazelEnergie, a group led by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky.
