In New York, employees of an Apple Store organize to form a union

While the employees of several Apple Stores plan to unionize, those of the store of Grand Central Station in New York launch the first stage of the formation of a union.

Will New York become the bane of Gafam, who fear more than anything the creation of unions by their employees? It’s possible. After seeing, for the first time, Amazon employees vote to form a union on Staten Island, employees at the Apple Store in Grand Central Station began collecting signatures for the same purpose.

As indicated by the washington post, the organizers – united within Fruit Stand Workers United – announced on February 21 that they had approached the Workers United structure with a view to the creation of this union. A group which was notably chosen by employees of the Starbucks brand for the creation of union training across the United States.

Legally, at least 30% of employees must express their interest in the creation of a union before moving on to the next stage, namely the opening of a request for the organization of a ballot with the National Bureau of unions (National Labor Relations Board, or NLRB). It is with this in mind that Fruit Stand Workers United collects the signatures of employees of this Apple Store.

“Grand Central is a special store with unique working conditions that make union formation necessary to ensure our team has the best possible living and working conditions at a key time”explain the initiators of the project who cite, among the difficulties encountered, store closures during the pandemic or even inflation.

It’s been a few months since the creation of unions at Apple has become a little background music. According to washington post, employees of at least three other Apple Stores are currently working on setting up equivalent processes. Each time, a level of remuneration is mentioned that is no longer in line with the cost of living and difficult working conditions.

Efforts already made by Apple

“We are pleased to offer very strong compensation and benefits to full-time and part-time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, awards annual shares and many other benefits […] We are blessed with amazing retail team members and deeply appreciate all they bring to Apple.”said a spokesperson for the firm to the American newspaper.

Last February, in response to repeated complaints from employees in the press, Apple announced the entry into force, as of April 2022, of new benefits for its American employees. In particular, it is a question of doubling the number of days of sick leave granted to employees (12 instead of six), increasing the number of days of paid leave from three years of seniority in the company, against five previously, as well as the establishment of paid leave and medical aid for part-time employees.
