Since retiring from active politics, former Chancellor Merkel has been working on her political memoirs. In addition to her growing up in the GDR, it will also be about major world politics – one central question is the focus.

The political memoirs of long-time Chancellor Angela Merkel are scheduled to appear at the end of November this year. This was announced by the publishing house Kiepenheuer & Witsch.

The CDU politician wants to look back on her political life on around 700 pages under the title “Freedom. Memories 1954 – 2021”. “What is freedom for me? This question concerns me my whole life. Politically, of course, because freedom needs democratic conditions; without democracy there is no freedom, no rule of law, no respect for human rights,” said Merkel.

“But the question also concerns me on another level. Freedom – for me that means finding out where my own limits are and pushing myself to my own limits. For me, freedom is not stopping learning, not standing still but to be allowed to go further, even after leaving politics.”

In terms of content, Merkel’s memories will be about her growing up in the GDR and the beginning of her political career as well as her work as Chancellor over 16 years, according to the publisher’s announcement. The 69-year-old, who led Germany politically as Chancellor in various coalitions from 2005 to 2021, wrote the work together with her long-time office manager Beate Baumann. The memoir is scheduled to be published in over 30 countries worldwide.
