In a clip posted on January 4 on Twitter and spotted by Kotaku on Jan. 9, pro gamer Brian St. Pierre says Fatale character’s Medusa outfit is likely to become a liability during competitive play.

This Medusa costume, sold for 2,200 points in the shop (the equivalent of €20) is linked to an event called “the Battle for Olympus” – where several characters inherit mythological superpowers. By becoming Medusa, Widowmaker can turn enemies to stone with Divine Infravision. The problem: the snakes that litter her head would make a lot of noise in the ears of some, which would make her more easily spotted and prevent you from discerning the sounds coming from other players.

Some therefore see this skin as a pay-to-lose cosmetic element, that is to say something that we would buy to… lose. It is the opposite of pay-to-win, a practice which allows the wealthiest to win by paying more than the others.

Overwatch having a certain competitive dimension, it is reasonable to think that Blizzard will look into this Medusa outfit if it constitutes a real problem at a high and very high level. No doubt a middle way is possible, by adjusting a little the noise generated by the costume without removing the fun.
