in prison, he resigns (finally) from his mandate as mayor of Draveil

Georges Tron has until now continued to be mayor of Draveil when he is sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, three of which are firm, for rape and sexual assault.

It is a victory for many feminist associations. Sentenced on February 17, 2021 for rape and sexual assault, Georges Tron, from prison, resigned Tuesday, May 25, 2021, from his post as mayor of Draveil, in Essonne, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP). “I confirm the resignation of Georges Tron from his mandate as mayor”, said Richard Privat, first deputy, in a letter addressed to the Prefecture of Essonne and consulted by AFP. He even claims that he is about“a very painful decision”.

Incarcerated in the prison of Health in Paris, Georges Tron had for months held the town hall with an iron fist despite his conviction, which denounced Dare Feminism! and theAVFT (which has long called for the dismissal of elected officials who have committed sexual violence). These associations had challenged the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister by letters. A online petition, which brought together 36,000 signatories, also asked the Council of Ministers to revoke Georges Tron from his mandate as mayor.

For the LR president of the Essonne department, François Durovray, “Georges Tron’s resignation is a logical decision. It clarifies a situation which had become particularly complicated for the inhabitants of Draveil and difficult to bear for the victims”.

As shared in a previous article, the European association against Violence against Women at Work (AVFT) has been leading since 2005 a campaign for mayors convicted by justice to be stripped of their civil rights and revoked. For associations, it is intolerable that a man guilty of rape retains full powers in a town hall “and consequently, the attributions of civil status officer, judicial police officer, that as such, he continues to ensure, under the control of the prefect, the application of laws and regulations, that ‘he continues to exercise municipal police power and hierarchical authority over municipal staff. ”

However, behind this good news, Dare Feminism! retweeted a post from the opposition politician to Draveil Francois Damerval announcing that Georges Tron “remains municipal councilor and community councilor.” Adding: “He makes the choice of the calendar, of his replacement at the town hall and at the departmental council.” The fight is therefore not completely over.
