In Saint-Nazaire, the largest wind farm out of the sea


REPORTAGE – Inaugurated this Thursday by the President of the Republic, these 80 wind turbines must produce the equivalent of 50% of the domestic electricity consumption of the Loire-Atlantique. A first in France.

The place is symbolic. This Thursday, Emmanuel Macron will also make a trip there to inaugurate it and present the ” major axes of his renewable energy acceleration bill.

The figures for the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm alone – the first offshore in France – are impressive: 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 480 MW installed on a rocky bank, 78 km2 of surface area, a network of inter-wind cables protected and stabilized by cast iron half-shells and bags of riprap, an electrical substation (large transformer) at sea, a double submarine then underground connection to the electrical network at very high voltage, 200 French companies concerned, 2300 jobs mobilized in France including 1200 in the Pays de la Loire for construction and 100 created for maintenance, 2 billion euros of investment… and the strong and regular offshore wind transformed into electricity.
