A strong thunderstorm front caused some serious damage in Salzburg on Monday evening. The extremely slow-moving thunderstorms caused heavy rainfall, hail and flooding, especially in Pinzgau and Pongau. A total of 31 fire brigades with 1,060 men and women worked on 236 missions, the state fire brigade command announced. In Pinzgau, a farm was set on fire by lightning, and in Tennengau a hunting dog was killed by lightning.Lightning struck a farmFirefighters pumped out flooded cellars, removed fallen trees, cleared mudslides and cleared blockages in streams. Clean-up work was still underway on Tuesday morning or will continue during the day. In Pongau, the Grossarl state road had to be closed, but one lane was passable again in the morning. The state road administration has informed that due to mudslides, the B163, the Wagrainer road, between St. Johann im Pongau and Wagrain is completely closed until further notice. Evasion is only possible over a large area via the A10, the Tauern Autobahn. On the Wagrainer Straße, three cars were trapped by mudslides in the evening and could not drive any further. The fire service was able to bring all occupants to safety with a wheel loader.In Bramberg am Wildkogel (Pinzgau), lightning struck a mountain farm on Monday evening. Alarm level 3 was triggered, and a major operation involving over 130 firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the fire. The damage is likely to be considerable, however. The fire service reported two forest fires in Unken and Wald in Pinzgau, which may have been started by lightning strikes.Hunting dog struck by lightningIn Tennengau, two hunters were surprised by an approaching thunderstorm in the afternoon, according to the police. When the heavy rain started, the two men were still seeking shelter from the storm in a seat on the ground when lightning suddenly struck in the immediate vicinity. The 63-year-old and the 55-year-old were slightly injured. However, help came too late for the hunting dog, who was sitting under the bench of the floor seat when lightning struck.
