Hundreds of opponents of measures go “for a walk”

In Saxony and Thuringia, only fixed rallies with a few participants are currently allowed, the reason is the disastrous corona situation in the countries. Nevertheless, hundreds of people are again moving through Freiberg, Erfurt, Chemnitz and other cities to protest against the measures to combat pandemic.

In Saxony and Thuringia, around 2000 people protested against the state corona measures in various places in the evening. According to the police, around 650 people took part in an unauthorized “Corona walk” in Thuringia’s state capital, Erfurt. Many had candles with them, but they did not wear mouth and nose protection. A police spokesman said the protest was “peaceful and largely trouble-free”.

Throughout Thuringia, a protest against the corona policy of the state and federal government was called in the social networks. Outside the state capital, the number of participants remained mostly in the double-digit range, the police spokesman continued. The Thuringian Corona Emergency Ordinance currently only allows stationary rallies with a maximum of 35 participants. Hundreds of people went for a walk in Thuringia unannounced and together at the weekend. In Eisenach, a gathering of several hundred people had clashes with the police who used irritant gas. Two police officers were injured, according to the police.

In Saxony, too – as on the weekend – hundreds of people defied the Corona emergency ordinance on Monday evening, which currently only allows stationary rallies with a maximum of ten participants. According to a police spokeswoman, around 700 people were on an unauthorized “Corona walk” in Freiberg. The attempt to address them early on and to dissolve the meeting had “not been fruitful”. The unregistered “walks” and actions were directed as far as possible out of the city center and proceeded quietly. Among the protesters was the right wing radical Jürgen Elsässer, editor-in-chief of the “Compact” magazine.

In Chemnitz and Zwickau, too, several hundred people walked through the city in protest against the state and federal corona policy. Up to 300 people have been on the streets in the meantime, said the respective police spokesman. Around 25 advertisements were also recorded during the operation in Chemnitz. According to the police, there were also protests in Dresden, Neustadt in Saxony, Pirna, Sebnitz, Riesa and Großenhain. In all cases, the police spoke to the people and asked them to leave the area; what they did.

The Eastern Commissioner of the previous federal government, Marco Wanderwitz, called on Twitter to stop the meetings. “The fact that in Saxony in this corona situation, disturbed and right-wing extremists apparently” successfully “demonstrate the rule of law with public gatherings every day, causes serious damage.”
