In series! – Mini electric convertible: maxi fun, mini range

The first all-electric convertible comes from BMW: In April, the Mini Cooper SE with a fabric top will be launched, in time for the start of the season. The occupants are not only surrounded by the wind, but also by a good conscience. Is that the reason why Munich turned the devil’s number upside down with the planned number?

The dashing Luftstromer is limited to 999 pieces (while 666 is “the number of the beast”). For all of Europe! So you should be quick there if you want to drive open-top without the slightest hint of exhaust gas. It’s one last firework display before the successor model starts. So far, there hasn’t been an electrically powered convertible in series production. Although Fiat describes the 500C as a convertible, it is really not much more than a small car with a particularly large folding roof – the rest (except for the rear window) remains. It’s similar with the Smart, except it’s only half a car. And the first Tesla, the lotus-based roadster, is long history. After the one-off that they showed last summer, now comes the production model, numbered from 1 to 999. With rims made of recycled aluminum. Last time the seats are made of leather, head-up display and radar cruise control are standard. Yellow accents can be found everywhere in the interior, bronze-colored ones on the outside. The paint is black or white. At 160 liters, the trunk has the same volume as in the combustion engine convertible. Technically, the convertible corresponds to the normal Cooper SE: the electric motor has an output of 135 kW/184 hp and is powered by a net 28.9 kWh battery. However, because the convertible is significantly heavier and offers more resistance to the airstream, the driving performance is somewhat lower: BMW specifies 8.2 seconds for the standard sprint, i.e. almost a second more, and the range shrinks from 232 to 201 kilometers. The top speed is probably limited to 150 km/h. The hood can be opened up to 30 km/h, which increases the driving pleasure, but further reduces the range. The only bad thing about the little joy dispenser is the price: 59,990 euros.
