The shortage of caregivers is a fundamental problem that has only become more apparent in times of the pandemic. The Federal Employment Agency has now reached an agreement with the Indian state of Kerala. Since there are enough nurses there according to WHO standards, recruiting is allowed.

The Federal Employment Agency has signed a mediation agreement for nurses with the Indian state of Kerala. By recruiting specialist staff abroad, the authority is helping to find the nursing staff required for the German labor market, explained the Federal Employment Agency (BA). The first recruits are therefore planned for 2022. After several months of preparation, the first nurses should come to Germany in 2023.

According to the BA, this is the second mediation agreement with a non-EU country. The aim of the agreement is to attract nursing staff to German hospitals, clinics and care facilities.

According to the BA, particular attention was paid during the negotiations to the fact that nurses are not recruited in countries where there is a shortage themselves. Accordingly, the number of nurses per inhabitant in the state of Kerala is above the Indian national average and the corresponding guideline value of the World Health Organization.

Before the care workers travel to Germany, they should be prepared for work in Germany in their home country. According to the BA, they should receive linguistic and technical support offers before they leave the country.

The number of people in need of care in Germany is increasing faster than previously assumed, according to a care report presented by Barmer health insurance on Wednesday. By the year 2030, with a total of around six million people in need of care, there will be more than one million more people than previously expected. At the same time, according to conservative estimates, there will be a shortage of more than 180,000 nurses.
