In the first part of the two-part documentary in the “Im Visier” series, Uwe Madel introduces the Berlin forensic pathologist Dr. Sven Hartwig from the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the Charité. The experienced doctor reports on the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death, which could be clarified thanks to his examinations and the results of the autopsy.
When he is called to the home of a deceased elderly man, the cause of death seems clear. The pensioner had had a heart condition for years, and everything points to a heart attack. But unexplainable injuries to the dead man and clues in the apartment prompt Dr. Hartwig to do an autopsy. And he can actually prove that the pensioner did not die of heart failure – he was murdered.
A particularly brutal case occupied the forensic pathologist in the spring of 2012. Within a few weeks, Dirk P. killed three men in Berlin, one of them in the darkroom of a gay bar. But how did he kill her? dr Hartwig can prove that Dirk P. poisoned his victims with knockout drops. Since then, when the circumstances of death are unknown, the examination for knockout drops has been part of the toxicological routine.
