In Strasbourg, a “green prescription” for pregnant women

Mobilized for a long time against pollution by endocrine disruptors, the city of Strasbourg has launched, Wednesday, November 16, a new system aimed at limiting the exposure of the population to these substances. It aims for a period during which human beings are particularly sensitive to it: fetal life and early childhood. On the model of the “sport-health on prescription” system set up ten years ago, a “green prescription” can thus be prescribed by health professionals (gynecologists, midwives and general practitioners) to pregnant Strasbourg women who volunteer. It will give access, free of charge, to two awareness-raising workshops organized within the ten medical-social centers of the city, as well as the delivery, each week, of three kilograms of organic vegetables from local farms.

“Endocrine disruptors are the symbol of the derailment of our consumer society. It was important for us to inform future mothers about the risks they generate, but also to give them alternative solutions. One of them is access to products from quality agriculture and free of these substances”indicates the mayor (EELV) of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian.

“Breast or prostate cancer, attention disorders and autism spectrum disorders, malformations, precocious puberty, reduced fertility… The effects of endocrine disruptors are now scientifically proven. It is the whole family ecosystem that must transform its practices, during pregnancy and after”completes Doctor Alexandre Feltz, deputy in charge of public and environmental health, and project leader.

As part of the system, 800 women will therefore be followed for seven months, through 110 workshops informing them of the practices to adopt to protect themselves from these substances, but also to rethink the content of their plate. The recruitment of participants goes through health professionals. Volunteers will be able to register online, on the platform launched on Wednesday. The first panel was recruited by word of mouth. Michèle – who asked to remain anonymous – pregnant with her fourth child, joined the device in order to learn more about the issue. “Many children around me have communication problems, they isolate themselves or are angry. I’ve often wondered why, and today I got the first answers.”believes the young woman.
