This Saturday evening, July 9 in Syracuse (Sicily), on the piazza Duomo, it is not the usual tourists that the inhabitants observe from their balconies. In front of the cathedral, a long podium and a few hundred chairs have been set up by Dolce & Gabbana for its “Alta moda” fashion show. Sharon Stone is one of the guests. The American star – and muse of the brand – gazes with satisfaction at her long turquoise train blooming with roses, peonies and hydrangeas that an assistant spreads out on the ocher stones of the square. Beside her, Drew Barrymore shines in her fuchsia and poppy dress, less showy than that of Helen Mirren in the colors of the rainbow, or that of Mariah Carey who arrived escorted by designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in a very low-cut sheath dress, brightened up by a patchwork of prints. One could suppose that such a skewer of celebrities is likely to cause a crowd. But most of the seven hundred and fifty guests are too busy putting themselves on stage in their “DG” branded outfits to observe or immortalize them. For the vast majority, they are Dolce Gabbana customers – they wear outfits just as sumptuous, if not more so, than the Hollywood elite.
