A lawsuit filed in Texas questions the incognito mode of Google Chrome.
According to the Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton, the incognito mode of the Internet browser Google Chrome would not be as anonymous as it seems. These elements have been qualified as an invasion of privacy and have been added to the file of the legal action initiated by Texas against Google last January.
Private browsing and location history
Most web browsers have a private browsing feature or incognito mode for Google Chrome. When this feature is enabled, a pop-up session separate from the main session is created within the browser. When closing the private browsing window, all data that has been stored locally is destroyed.
According to the complaint, Google is misleading its users and still collects certain personal location-related data despite activating the incognito mode. In fact, it would be necessary to manually disable the automatic storage of location history in Google settings. It is on this point that Mr. Paxton bases his accusations, arguing that the user thinks he is safe from any tracking when he is browsing in incognito mode.
In his report, Ken Paxton adds that the activation of the incognito browsing mode generally refers to the consultation of websites with very personal data. The document specifies that it may be content with political, medical or even sexual orientation connotations. In another register, Chrome’s incognito mode could be activated to buy a surprise gift by preventing the recipient from receiving ads related to these searches.
The principal concerned has not yet responded to these new accusations.
