The Salto platform soon to be abandoned by TF1?
In mid-September, we learned that the merger announced between the TF1 and M6 groups will ultimately not take place. Recently promoted to head of the TF1 group,
Rodolphe Belmer now plans to withdraw from the Salto platform, launched in partnership with France Télévisions and M6 in 2020.
This would be a new group strategy, which
would then rely on a free audience model. This would also involve tightening the distribution channels of the media owned by the Bouygues group. It remains to be seen now what will become of Salto. The streaming platform still presents itself as a French and mainstream alternative to the American giants whose presence is intensifying (Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, Amazon Video, etc.).
With regard to TF1, it should also be remembered that the group’s free channels have not been accessible to Canal+ subscribers for several weeks. The TMC, TFX, TF1 Séries Films and LCI channels were indeed withdrawn from the application at the beginning of September, and Canal+ was recently confirmed in its right not to restore them.
