Eight years after its release, Microsoft is preparing to disconnect Cortana from its operating system, Windows 11, to replace it with more powerful AI tools.
Like all the other tech giants, Microsoft is investing more and more in the field of generative artificial intelligence, in particular through its partnership with OpenAI, developer of ChatGPT. Gradually, the Windows publisher therefore intends to sprinkle GPT everywhere on its services, whether it is its Bing search engine or its Windows operating system.
However, this strategy was not without asking questions about the future of the virtual assistant developed by Microsoft: Cortana. Launched in 2015, the assistant already made it possible to interact – moreover by voice – with the operating system by asking it questions or sending it voice commands. A use that could duplicate GPT and, for this reason, Microsoft decided to put an end to Cortana.
Cortana will disappear from the end of 2023
As reported by the site Windows Centrala Microsoft support page now states the “end of Cortana support” from “the end of the year 2023“. Nevertheless, the editor specifies that the assistant will always be available within a dedicated application and within several of its services:
This change only affects Cortana in Windows and your productivity assistant, Cortana, will still be available within Outlook mobile, Teams Mobile, Microsoft Teams screens, and Microsoft Teams rooms.
In addition, Microsoft takes the opportunity to indicate that Windows 11 will offer voice access to control your computer and that ChatGPT is now integrated into several of its services, such as the Bing search engine or the Microsoft 365 suite with the new Copilot function based on artificial intelligence.
For the time being, the only date given by Microsoft as to the disappearance of Cortana from Windows is fixed at “end of 2023without further details.
