in the jungle of English lessons

Esma Chaïb, 34, did very well in English in high school. But in the ten years she has lived in France, she has lost a lot. “I who love contact, I now feel a real block to speak, lack of vocabulary”, she regrets. In 2021, she therefore decided to enroll in training at My English School, at the rate of two lessons per week for three months.

According to the Caisse des dépôts, 18% of training requests validated in 2021 on the personal training account platform (CPF) concerned the learning of modern languages, i.e. a total of 380,358 files. A record! They are in the top 3 of the most purchased formations. Certification courses in English hold the upper hand, in particular the Toeic (Test of English for International Communication), which alone was the subject of 82,539 files in 2021, almost twice as many as in 2020. .

With the implementation of the Professional Future law, promulgated in September 2018, many private pharmacies have rushed into the breach. “Previously, to convert your CPF hours into euros and obtain funding, you had to go through skills operators (Opco), which could take three to six months”, recalls Déborah Guillotin, president of My English School, based in Lyon. By the time the training was completed and the Opcos made the payment, the training organizations could wait up to two years to recover the funds.

Freebies for using the CPF

Since the implementation of the “direct purchase path” on the Moncompteformation platform, in November 2019, they receive 25% deposit within thirty days after the start of the training, and the balance thirty days after its closure. No need therefore to have two years of cash in advance. “As there were very few controls at the start, we saw many new players emerge on the market, not always very serious”, reports Guillaume le Dieu de Ville, co-founder of Lingueo. Some organizations solicit influencers, who offer their subscribers on social networks to benefit from ” gifts “ – computers, tablets – at reduced prices for any training financed with the CPF.

Others go much further. Dominique Dirand, a 74-year-old doctor still in activity, paid the price. “A month and a half ago, a very nice man called me on my mobile to tell me about my rights to training”, he says. “As I had never been to the new Moncompteformation site, I gladly accepted the help it offered me. » Dominique unsuspectingly gives him his Social Security number. Without him really understanding it, he is automatically enrolled in a nine-hour distance learning English course – a program he has never taken. All for 1900 euros, taken from his CPF. When Dominique noticed the scam, he managed to cancel his registration. But he might very well not have noticed.
