The Minister Delegate for Transport Clément Beaune wants to put an end to the practice of very low-cost plane tickets.

For him, we must put an end to these tickets which too easily encourage the French to take the plane, a mode of transport much more polluting than the train. So, to change habits, he wants to go through legislation.

The train much cheaper than the plane

We heard a lot about Clément Beaune this summer. The Minister has indeed been very active in promoting the train during the holidays, setting up attractive rates to push the French towards rail. He seems to like this policy by the wallet, since he wants to take it back, this time to keep the population away from certain planes.

Taking note of the far too considerable difference between the price of planes and that of trains, a difference which could go up to a price multiplied by 30 for the same journey, he wishes ” the introduction of a minimum airfare “, according to an interview he gave this week to The Obs. Plane tickets at 10 euros, at the time of ecological transition, this is no longer possible ! » he thus denounced.

A Europe-wide proposal

To begin a new era, the politician will submit in the coming days to his European counterparts a proposal for ” fight against social and environmental dumping “. This kind of proposal is not new. In 2020, the National Union of Airline Pilots (SNPL) was already asking for the introduction on the Old Continent of such a measure, while Austria said it wanted to impose a minimum average price of 40 euros for each flight.

On the other side of the barrier, of course, the story is different. The leader in the field, Ryanair, has always criticized these proposals, which would go against free pricing. But not against the environmental emergency? This is what Clément Beaune believes. ” I fully assume taxation of polluting activities to invest in this ecological transition “, he says in the same interview. Remember that some companies like easyJet invest in the environment sector.
