In the Senate, the emotion of Pap Ndiaye when discussing the suicide of Lucas

Emotion at the heart of government. On January 7, a 13-year-old boy committed suicide at his home in Golbey, in the Vosges. Faced with this tragedy, his family denounces that he was the recurring target of several of his comrades and in particular because of his homosexuality. This Wednesday, environmental senator Mélanie Vogel questioned the Minister of National Education and Youth Pap Ndiaye in the Senate on school harassment, homophobia and the suicide of young Lucas. “The school is in society, nourished by its hatreds and kneaded by its violence. Will you, for Lucas’ family, have the humility to change?”, She asks.

Pap Ndiaye moved by the case

Lucas’ suicide did not leave the French government indifferent. “When a child ends his life, there is no word,” initially replied the Minister of National Education to the senator. A first sentence marked by the trembling voice of Pap Ndiaye, touched by the words of Mélanie Vogel, and followed by a question: “what do you want me to tell you?”. After that, the politician took the time to address his “most emotional thoughts” to his parents, relatives and friends, before speaking out on the issues that drove young Lucas to suicide.

“This drama shows how the fight against school bullying, homophobia, because yes homophobia kills, must remain a priority for the government”, insists the minister. Pap Ndiaye continues by specifying that sexual orientation is often a point of support for the perpetrators of harassment. “We act to change the representations that fuel hatred. In terms of homophobia and equality between women and men, prevention involves in particular sexuality education. This is why, as of last September , I took measures to make effective these teachings which, let’s admit it, are not properly assured today”, underlines Pap Ndiaye.

The commitment of Pap Ndiaye

Then, the minister broached the subject of the fight against homophobia in response to the senator. “I have decided that in each academy should be generalized in the coming weeks, awareness, prevention and action groups against LGBT phobias. And I will follow this personally,” he says.

“We still have, it’s true, senator, a long way to go,” recognizes Pap Ndiaye. On the other hand, the Minister wishes to specify that the National Education is fully committed in the matter. “You can count on me,” he concludes.
