The filming of the series “In the shadows”, the adaptation of the political thriller co-written by Edouard Philippe, has started in Paris and in Hauts-de-France. So we finally know the cast of the show in which we will find three great figures of French cinema: Melvil Poupaud, Swann Arlaud and Karine Viard.
In the dark is the adaptation of one of Edouard Philippe’s novels, published in 2011. A political thriller written with his lifelong sidekick, MEP Gilles Boyer. This fiction tells the story of an apparatchik who works, behind the scenes, to elect a candidate for the presidential election.
And that’s it, filming has just started in Paris and Hauts-de-France.

So we finally know the cast of the show: it is Melvil Poupaud who will play this famous candidate for the presidential election. His shadow adviser will be played by Swann Arlaud, César for best actor in 2018. We also find in the cast the excellent Karine Viard, who will play the competitor of the main character played by Melvil Poupaud. Note that Edouard Philippe and Gilles Boyer will not play in the series, but have been associated with the writing of its screenplay from the start.
“César Casalonga (Swann Arlaud) has two passions in life: his job as a political adviser where he excels as a strategist and his boss, Paul Francoeur (Melvil Poupaud), whom he has accompanied for 20 years in the ascent which must lead him to the presidency of the Republic”, can we read in the synopsis broadcast by France Télévisions on Monday April 17, 2023.
