As the US presidential election approaches, Texas and Washington are engaged in a real battle over the border between the United States and Mexico. Its governor, Greg Abbott, has been blocking the passage of migrants for three weeks.
In the United States, nothing is going well between Washington and the Republican governor of Texas, determined to resolve the migration crisis at his borders himself. For almost three weeks now, the Texas National Guard, which is under the orders of Governor Greg Abbott, has taken control of part of the border with Mexico to block the passage of migrants. Soldiers are also preventing federal agents from accessing that border in what almost seems like a mini-secession.
“This open border, a horrible betrayal of America”
On the Washington side, the Senate and the White House have been discussing for weeks to find a solution. But Donald Trump and his allies in Congress did everything to derail the negotiations, something the Republican candidate is very proud of. “They were about to pass a very bad law. As the leader of our party, there is no way I will support this open border which is a horrible betrayal of America,” launched the former president of the United States.
Immigration, a hot issue as the presidential election approaches
Donald Trump obviously sees an advantage in letting the situation at the border deteriorate. It’s a campaign theme that resonates with his electorate. But Democrats could also use the argument of his permanent obstruction to emphasize that the former president prefers political maneuvering to the good of the country. It seems more and more complicated to pass any law in a country more divided than ever.
