In the urban area – the Salzach should get more space

The river bed in the city of Salzburg is to be widened against future floods. 30 million euros will be spent on this.

The state wants to implement a large-scale flood protection project between the two power plants Urstein and Lehen. The Salzach is to be widened on the approximately ten-kilometer section, flood protection walls are to be raised and tributaries widened. “In such a densely populated area, protection against flooding can only be considered together with local recreation areas, traffic and water ecology,” says Provincial Councilor Josef Schwaiger. The affected municipalities of Salzburg, Anif and Elsbethen are on board with the plans. However, it is only a rough plan, negotiations with landowners and the official procedures have not yet started. Schwaiger hopes that construction will start in 2026, the costs are likely to be around 20 to 25 million euros. In the city, the Salzach is to be given a tributary in the Josefiau, among other things, and a new cycle path is to be built between the Müllner Steg and Feingold-Steg on the old town side to within a few meters of the water.
