A few days ago, the Namecheap registrar suspended the domain name of the open source movie search application movie-web. A decision which made him lose control of the name of his demonstration site. According to Torrent Freakthis situation results from a dynamic injunction ordered by the High Court of Delhi in India on behalf of Netflix, Warner and Disney.
The latter, concerning 45 domain names linked to 28 separate entities, orders Indian Internet service providers to block these domains and requires registrars to lock and suspend them. The fact that movie-web is affected by this injunction is of concern because of its open source status, but also the transparency of its developers.
A situation all the more surprising since the injunction comes from India, which suggests that Namecheap, an American entity, has complied with it. Movie-web is still available for users, but its official demo site will remain offline. Most of the other domain names targeted by the injunction are still offline, proof of its effectiveness.
A practice that could multiply
India appears to offer a favorable legal environment and efficiency in implementing measures to combat online piracy, making it an attractive option for copyright owners seeking to protect their content. It is therefore likely that the big names in Hollywood will continue to turn to the Asian country, since American platforms are responding.
