To put an end to school bullying, a Parisian establishment is currently testing a system inspired by that of Danish schools which offer empathy courses.
A terrible tragedy. On September 5, a 15-year-old teenager killed himself at the family home located in Poissy (Yvelines). The high school student, who hanged himself from the bars of his loft bed, was found by his mother. Last spring, he confessed to being a victim of school harassmentaccording to The Parisian. In April, his parents wrote a letter to the school, criticizing the lack of measures. This boy, named Nicolas, is one of the victims of this scourge which, each year in France, concerns many students.
In reaction, Gabriel Attal, the Minister of Education, spoke at the microphone of BFM TV. “We must develop the culture of empathy at school”, notably estimated the politician. In some countries, this ability – which consists of identifying with others in order to better understand what they are feeling – is a subject like any other. This is particularly the case in Denmark, where, for twenty years already, children and adolescents have been made aware of this approach which consists of paying attention to those around us. And it seems that the idea is catching on in France, because a Parisian establishment is testing a similar device…

Workshops to introduce children to empathy
In a school located in the 18th arrondissement of the capital, an appointment was made with an association. Regularly, a worker speaks to children to help them better identify situations of harassment, reports BFM TVthis Saturday, September 23. “We work [sur] consent, that is to say the courage to say no”confides this woman, a woman named Chahra Joubrel-Merahi, to the microphone of the channel.
The next moment, she developed more fully the approach undertaken with our colleagues. The aim of these workshops is to teach young people to “not to stay in your emotion, this astonishment that we can have when something violent happens to us”. But also, to create in them the desire to help each other… with the hope that tragedies, like the one that cost Nicolas’ life, never happen again.
