“In this world, I no longer feel the need to tell stories”: Xavier Dolan ready to hang up the camera

Will Xavier Dolan be absent from film sets? The Quebec filmmaker gave an interview to the Journal de Montréal in which he expresses his need to take a break, live other experiences.

While he should soon unveil his highly anticipated first series, The night where Laurier Gaudreault woke up (broadcast on Canal + in France), Xavier Dolan gave some news of his projects. Kept away from the cinema with this long-term series, we were impatient to know if Xavier Dolan had new desires, in the cinema, or in series, to come after this news. It looks like the wait could be quite long.

In an interview granted to the Journal de Montréal, the filmmaker does not hide his fatigue, caused by the investment in this series: “I really gave myself 200% in a whole, passionate and even aggressive way in this project.”.

I don’t really want to do that job anymore. I’m tired.

And to add: “But at the same time, I don’t really want to do that job right now. I’m kind of tired. It’s 2022, and the world has changed drastically. Me, in that world, I don’t more necessarily feel the need to tell stories and relate to myself. I want to take time to be with my friends and my family. I want to shoot commercials and build myself a house in the country a day when I’ve put enough money aside. I’m not saying that in a sad way at all. I just want to live something else, other experiences.”

As the Journal de Montréal points out, it is more exactly the stages of the production of the series that have caused fatigue. Xavier Dolan says it has been “disheartening” and “draining”. “If I could shoot a movie or a series and disappear afterwards, I would. But we know that before filming, there is preparation and then there are all the stages of post-production. I think I’m not really cut out for this anymore.”

This may be my way of saying goodbye for a little while…

Xavier Dolan explains that he does not have a film project in mind at the moment, and returns to an episode that he did not experience very well. “Having released Donovan a month before Matthias and Maxime killed both films. Of course, you don’t spend all that time making a film with the sweat of your brow so that only five people can see it!

In conclusion to his article, the Journal de Montréal once again quotes Xavier Dolan about his series: “It is not insignificant if there is in this series a reflection on life, death, mourning, redemption, family. It is a fairly global and existential work. And maybe this is my way of saying goodbye for a little while…

One of Xavier Dolan’s last public appearances in France dates back to the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, on the red carpet of Brother and Sister by Arnaud Desplechin. A few months before, he had returned to France to pay a vibrant tribute to Gaspard Ulliel at the Césars.
