In turmoil, TikTok crosses the milestone of 150 million users in the United States

That’s called having a sense of timing. Two days before a crucial hearing for TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew before the US Congress, the short video application announced that it had passed the bar of 150 million local users, 50 million more than in 2020, the last year the company quantified its community. A month ago, TikTok announced a similar number of users in Europe.

Particularly popular with teenagers, the Chinese application has recorded record growth in recent years, making Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat green with envy. But this resounding success was accompanied by a growing mistrust of Western authorities towards the platform, accused of being too close to Beijing. Donald Trump had opened hostilities during his term in the White House, before Joe Biden took over when he came to power in January 2021.

Towards a split between TikTok and ByteDance?

In recent months, the situation has deteriorated particularly for TikTok across the Atlantic, where pressure is growing stronger, both on the side of the Democrats and in the Republican camp. To escape the ultimate sanction of banishment, the only solution for TikTok could be to separate from its parent company ByteDance.

This split could materialize by a sale or an IPO, but this option is only considered as a last resort, and could only be done subject to the approval of the Chinese government. According to the US press, however, it is the only one that would satisfy the White House, insofar as the guarantees offered by the company on the protection of user data have not convinced the local authorities.
