in which economic class of the population are you really?

It was in its 2023 edition that the Observatory of Inequalities decided to publish a report making it possible to classify households into different categories according to their income. Modest, rich, poor… which category do you really belong to?

Have you always wondered which class of the population you really find yourself in? Thanks to the Observatory of Inequalities, you no longer need to ask yourself the question! The organization has just published a report in which it evaluates the various incomes after taxes and social benefits with the aim of providing a category scale. So, middle class, modest, rich or even poor, it’s time to find out which category you belong to!

Several elements have been taken into account by the organization in order to provide this classification, including the minimum wage, which is currently at 1,350 euros net per month for full-time work. It is still important to note that some households are not taken into account in the classification scale, the organization explains: “at the very bottom of the income scale, the most modest escape statistical measurement, but we know that part of the population lives on only 200 or 300 euros per month, or even less“. Examples include the homeless or undocumented migrants. Others also escape this classification, recipients of RSA or ASS for example, who do not receive more than 500 euros per month. Indeed, they hardly reach half the poverty line.

The poverty line set at 940 euros per month

According to the table published by the Observatory of Inequalities, the poverty line has been set at 940 euros per month for a single person, 1223 euros for a single-parent family and 1411 euros for a childless couple. This figure increases to 1693 euros for a family with a child under 14 years old. That’s about 4.8 million people in France. Still according to the report, the population located in the working classes would receive less than 1495 euros for a single person and less than 2243 euros for a childless couple. This figure increases to 2691 euros for a family with a child under 14 years old.

If we climb the income scale little by little, we can see that the population in the middle class earns about 1880 euros per month for a single person, a person considered to be well off earns more than 2693 euros per month. For a childless couple, this figure rises to around 3150 euros per month for the middle class and more than 4040 euros for wealthy households.

According to the survey, the wealth threshold was set at 3762 euros per month for a single person, more than double that of the working class. The report indicates that only 7% of the population (4.5 million people) could be classified above the wealth threshold in France, it adds: “From 4,113 euros per month, you belong to the richest 5%. And at 7,180 euros, we enter the top 1%“.
