In your face, Urus! – BMW XM: The polarizer is loose – and surprises!

You should probably sit down first to be able to better absorb the sight of this BMW. The people of Munich pull the cloth from the XM, a mighty sports SUV that is as thick as possible and attacks the Lamborghini Urus directly on the macho field. Attention, this is not an exercise – the XM will also be launched in Austria in spring!

The XM is, so to speak, the X6 translated into the present day. When this rolled to the dealers 14 years ago, it caused a similar amount of attention, shaking heads, but also admiration. You have to trust a vehicle like that first! Which also applies to the XM. One thing is certain: the XM has a number of superlatives. BMW speaks of the “first electrified high-performance model from BMW M” and at the same time the “first original BMW M automobile since the BMW M1”. Adaptive chassis, all-wheel drive and steering as well as active 48-volt roll stabilization ensure lateral performance, while a new plug-in hybrid drive, which generates a system output of 653 hp and a torque of 800 Nm, ensures longitudinal performance. A Lamborghini Urus with its 650 hp will probably still be circling around the BMW, because the mega-Bajuware weighs almost exactly half a ton more with a DIN curb weight of 2.7 tons. Seen in this way, the sprint value of 4.3 seconds is more than impressive (Lambo: 3.6 s). The electronics allow a top speed of up to 270 km/h. Double-heart drive with a good range The BMW beats the Urus in fields that it cannot even serve. That starts with the drive. They both have an eight-cylinder engine. The XM was newly developed, is 4.4 liters in size and 489 hp. In addition, there is a permanently excited synchronous electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, which alone has an output of 145 kW/197 hp and contributes 280 Nm (thanks to a special transmission, the torque at the transmission input increases to 450 Nm). It is fed by a net 25.7 kWh battery, which enables an electric WLTP range of up to 88 kilometers. Electrically up to 140 km/h are possible. The battery is charged via recuperation or by alternating current with up to 7.4 kW. DC charging is not offered. A flap exhaust with superimposed double hexagonal panels and “iconic sounds” in electric mode should also arouse emotions in passers-by. But this drive is just the beginning. BMW XM Label Red: In autumn 2023, the model range will be complemented the BMW XM Label Red. The most powerful production M model ever mobilizes a system output of 550 kW/748 hp (V8 with 585 hp, electric motor with 145 kW/197 hp) and a torque of 1000 Nm (750 plus 280 Nm). Brutal looks are understatement not the claim of the BMW XM. The 5.11 meter long, 2 meter wide and 1.76 meter high bolide carries powerful, contour-lit kidneys with gold edging and large air intakes in front of it, the two-part slot headlight units will divide the spirits even more than with the 7er/i7. When viewed from the side, there is also a gold-colored accent strip, which is intended to be reminiscent of the black body strip on the BMW M1. The rims measure 21 inches as standard, 22 or 23 inches are optional. Surprise in the interior It was to be expected that the cockpit features a curved display consisting of a 12.3-inch speedometer screen and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. What is surprising for some, however, is that the rest of the interior is arranged in a relatively classic way. There is a real automatic selector lever in the center console, and there is also an i-Controller.Full comfort, full sportBMW promises the “maximum spread between typical M dynamics and above-average driving comfort in the competitive environment”. The standard equipment, which includes the parking assistant with all functions, head-up display, cloud navigation system, 100 LED lighting for the roof lining, heated rear seats or four-zone climate control, is definitely comfortable. The global market launch is planned for spring 2023. The main sales markets are the USA, China and the Middle East. In Austria, the BMW XM will be available from 171,500 euros – around a third cheaper than the Lamborghini Urus.
