In Your Face, Volkswagen! – BYD presents fully-fledged e-car for 10,000 euros

Volkswagen recently rejected an electric car under 20,000 euros. Almost a template for Chinese manufacturers. The Chinese market leader has now presented the series model of a small Stromer – and it costs little more than half!

The BYD Seagull should cost the equivalent of just over 10,000 euros. In China mind you. The price will certainly be different for us, but it should also be possible in Europe under 20,000 euros. That is easy to predict, because BYD (stands for “Build Your Dreams”) has also been represented on the Austrian market since the beginning of the year. The BYD Dolphin has just been presented, which is said to be available from around 32,000 euros. In China, it costs the equivalent of a good 16,000 euros, which is about half that. So… Like Dolphin and Seal, the BYD Seagull belongs to the current “Ocean Aesthetics” design line, as the name suggests. And it should be small, but powerful, in other words: small, but a full-fledged car, and not even badly equipped. For the top version, even adaptive cruise control and other high-quality assistance systems should be available. Of course, all of this will cost extra. At 3.78 meters in length and 1.54 meters in height, the five-door car should offer space for four or five people, depending on the version. The wheelbase is 2.50 meters. Housed in the floor is a 30 kWh or 38 kWh battery, which should be enough for a distance of just over 300 kilometers or a good 400 kilometers (according to the not very practical Chinese CLTC standard). As with the other models, it is a self-made LFP battery, i.e. a lithium iron phosphate battery that does not require cobalt or nickel. Here, too, BYD specifies a charging time of 30 minutes for 30 to 80 percent. When it comes to the drive, a little restraint is required: the single motor delivers 55 kW/75 hp and 135 Nm towards the front wheels, the top speed is 130 km/h. Completely sufficient for a city flea. With a turning circle of 9.80 meters, it is at home in urban areas. In the interior, the first photos show a 5-inch Tachosisplay and a 12-inch touchscreen. It is not yet known when the Seagull will be on the market. The smallest “Build Your Dreams” announced for Austria is currently the Dolphin, a 4.29 meter long compact car, which should be available from dealers in late summer.
