“Club deeply disappointed”: Aberdeen fan arrested

Eintracht Frankfurt wins against FC Aberdeen at the start of the Conference League. The Scots leave Germany with no points. A fan also has to stay behind. The man undertakes a dangerous act.

FC Aberdeen had to return from the Conference League opener at Eintracht Frankfurt without any points. The Bundesliga club won the close game 2-1 (1-1) because national player Robin Koch scored the winning goal for Eintracht Frankfurt in the second half. And in addition to the points, a Scottish fan also remains in Frankfurt: A man was arrested because he committed a dangerous act in the stadium, which was sold out with 55,000 spectators, as is always the case at the big European Cup evenings in Frankfurt.

“During the first half of the game, one of the away fans threw a burning, pyrotechnic object into the neighboring home fan block. Fortunately, no one was injured. We caught the crime on video and arrested the suspect,” the Frankfurt police wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Aberdeen FC strongly condemned the arrestee’s behavior that evening: “The club is deeply disappointed that the actions of a small group of supporters during the game tarnish the good reputation of Aberdeen FC and the vast majority of Dons fans,” he wrote former European Cup winners on X. They will “fully cooperate with UEFA and the security authorities as part of the investigation”.

They were quite satisfied with the game itself at FC Aberdeen, who had surprisingly won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983 under the later Manchester United architect Sir Alex Ferguson. Even if there was disappointment at the end: “I’ve seen teams collapse against good teams in such an environment if they concede an early goal,” said coach Barry Robson, referring to the early goal by Omar Marmoush (11. Minute). Dante Povara equalized for the Scots in the 22nd minute before Robin Koch scored the winning goal after an hour.

“This was a great team that won the Europa League not long ago and has a lot of good players. We worked very hard, we stuck to the tactical plan and in the last ten minutes we could have gotten a draw can.” However, the equalizer would not have been deserved given the outsider’s very destructive game idea.
