Incidents in Rennes during a prohibited gathering


Incidents occurred Saturday afternoon in Rennes during a banned gathering while an authorized demonstration against racism and fascism took place without incident, in another part of the city, we learned from Prefecture.

During these incidents, in the heart of old Rennes on a square with several café terraces, “construction barriers were thrown on the police without causing injuries”, according to the prefecture. The approximately 300 demonstrators, according to the same source, were “dispersed by the forces of order who had to use means of intermediate forces (tear gas grenades)”.

A call for a rally, not officially declared, had been maintained despite the ban announced Friday by the prefecture.

This gathering “has not been the subject of any declaration in the prefecture”recalled the prefecture on Friday in a press release. “Also, in view of the proven risks to public order and following the inadmissible violence and degradation committed by individuals from the Rennes ultra-left” last Sunday, after the announcement of the results of the first round of the presidential election, “the undeclared protest rally in the prefecture of the ultra-left structure of Rennes (…) is prohibited”the statement said.

At the same time, a procession, led in particular by a “Collective of support for exiled people”gathered around 800 people, according to the prefecture.

Initially prohibited, this demonstration, which took place without incident, was finally authorized after modification of its course, approved this time by the prefecture.
