The day after the inclusion of voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in the Constitution, Frédéric Valletoux, Minister Delegate in charge of Health and Prevention, was the guest of La Grande interview Europe 1-CNews.
The deputies and senators meeting in Congress in Versailles largely approved on Monday the inclusion in the Constitution of the voluntary termination of pregnancy, France becoming the first country to do so explicitly. In total, 780 parliamentarians approved the introduction into article 34 of the basic text of the sentence: “The law determines the conditions under which the freedom guaranteed to women to have recourse to a voluntary termination of pregnancy is exercised” .
A source of pride for Frédéric Valletoux, Minister Delegate for Health and Prevention, guest of La Grande interview Europe 1-CNews on Tuesday. “I experienced it with a lot of pride and undoubtedly as a historic moment too,” he said.
“A moment of national unity”
Monday, the minister saw “a moment of national unity where the votes, very largely, went to vote for this inscription. Speeches marked, for the vast majority, with a lot of loftiness, whatever the speakers , a moment when the nation seemed united behind this idea of taking additional steps, of giving additional rights to women, recognition,” he continued.
The announcement of the results of the vote by the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, the first woman to preside over the Congress, led to an explosion of joy on the bright red armchairs of the hemicycle and on the Place du Trocadéro in Paris , where several hundred people gathered to watch the debates on a giant screen. “Including it in the Constitution achieved consensus and I welcome it,” concluded Minister Frédéric Valletoux.
