Income tax return: what changes in 2024

Since April 11, taxpayers can declare their 2023 income online. Depending on their department of residence, they have respectively until May 23 (departments nᵒ 1 to 19 and non-residents), May 30 (departments nᵒ 20 to 54) and June 6 (departments nᵒ 55 to 976) to complete their declaration on Impots.gouv.fr. For those who cannot use the Internet and still use the paper version, the deadline for filing the tax form is May 21, at 11:59 p.m.

For the first time, this year, taxpayers who wish will be able to use the Impots.gouv mobile application, downloaded to their smartphone, to declare their income. This new service, called “Declare my income” and accessible from the home page of the application, is however reserved for those who have a “simple tax situation, not involving changes to marital status or the presence of additional declarations”, specifies the brochure put online by the tax administration to help taxpayers complete their declaration. As with the Internet version, the main information known to the tax administration is automatically displayed or pre-filled, as appropriate.

From this application, it is possible to add or modify dependents (minor or adult children) and your bank identity statement, to validate or correct income known to the tax administration, to add other income or charges, provided that they appear within the “perimeter” of the mobile declaration. As with online reporting on the Internet, an estimate of the amount of tax payable or overpayment is provided at the end.

Among the other new features linked to the declaration now includes the obligation to report, at the start of the declaration process, whether or not you have moved in 2023 or 2024. Parents who request the reattachment of an adult child, single or married are also required to indicate his address if he does not live under their roof. Regarding dependent minor children, they must indicate whether they are students and, if so, provide their home address if they live in accommodation separate from that of their parents. If they do not indicate this, they will not be able to continue with their declaration.

Neutralize the effects of inflation

At the end of the declaration, in the “Summary” section, a new questionnaire appears. Taxpayers must respond before being able to sign their declaration. Those who own one or more real estate properties must notably mention whether changes in occupation of their property have taken place. If so, if they have not yet reported this change through the “Manage my real estate” service, accessible from their personal space on Impots.gouv.fr, they will be automatically directed to this service after signing. of their income tax return.
