Increase in 2022 – Land supports animal welfare with one million euros

Especially after Christmas, a particularly large number of animals are abandoned or given to animal shelters. A purchase should always be carefully considered. Unfortunately, it is often not. Then animal welfare institutions come into play. The state is funding their work with over one million euros in the coming year. The Mentlberg animal shelter is getting a new dog house.

“An animal means responsibility,” states Deputy Governor Josef Geisler. Those animals whose owners get rid of them or are unable to care for them appropriately would find a safe place in one of the five Tyrolean animal shelters. Unfortunately, this affects many animals – and especially after Christmas the number of abandoned or given up four-legged friends increases. In North Tyrol alone, the Animal Welfare Association takes care of 3,500 companions every year, the East Tyrolean Animal Welfare Association takes care of 200 and offers space for 100 cats, dogs, small animals and birds significantly increased compared to the previous year, ”says Geisler. The association for Tyrol is to be supported with 350,000 euros, that for East Tyrol with 75,000 euros. Tyrol’s largest location, the Mentlberg animal shelter in Innsbruck, is also to get a new dog house. The state wants to contribute 600,000 euros for this. New dog house, because the number of dogs is increasing The three dog rooms built in the 1960s, in which the dogs are housed in individual boxes, are being replaced by eleven dog rooms. Each dog should then have its own indoor and outdoor area and be able to switch freely between them. In addition, a training area should be created on the premises. The new dog house is necessary due to animal welfare regulations and the increasing number of confiscated dogs. They usually stay in the shelter for a long time. By the way: half of all criminal proceedings under the Animal Welfare Act involve dogs.
