PARIS (Reuters) – French banks have pledged to limit the rise in bank charges to 2% in 2023, Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire announced on Tuesday after a meeting with industry representatives.

“We are putting in place a shield on bank rates”, declared Bruno Le Maire during a press briefing in Bercy, alongside the president of the French Banking Federation (FBF), Laurent Mignon, at the origin of this proposal.

“This means that some French banks will freeze their bank charges for the whole of 2023 (…) it also means that all the banks have made a commitment not to increase their bank charges by more than 2% over the year 2023”, explained the minister.
