Increase in jobless claims 244,000


(Reuters) – U.S. jobless claims rose in the week to July 9 to 244,000 from 235,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists expected an average of 235,000 jobless claims.

The data for the week to July 2 has not been revised. The four-week moving average is 235,750 against 232,500 (unrevised) the previous week. The number of people regularly receiving benefits rose to 1.33 million during the week to July 2 (last week for which these figures are available) against 1.37 million (revised) the previous week.
